Lessons

In teaching piano, I want to create a positive and motivating environment where students, regardless of their age or level of playing, can build a strong foundation in the basics of music including rhythm, melody, harmony, ear training and sight reading. I wish for all my students to enjoy playing music on the piano.

Piano lessons are taught privately to allow students to work at their own pace and receive individualised instruction. Beginner lessons are taught using a variety of methods to introduce students to many styles of music and the foundations of music theory. I also teach lessons to prepare students for the Royal Conservatory of Music piano (Level 1 – 10) and theory examinations.

Policies

Practicing:

Students should practice piano at least 5 days a week for 20-60 minutes (depending on level). Practice guidelines will be given verbally and written in the student’s notebook. Daily practice sessions should have 3 parts: technique (warm-ups), new songs and reviewing old songs.

Note: Every student must have a keyboard instrument to practice on – an acoustic piano is preferred.

Practicing at home is essential for success in music! The more practice the better –  here is a guideline for practice times.

  • Years 1-3:          15-25 minutes, 5 times weekly
  • Grades 1-4:        30-45 minutes, 5 times weekly
  • Grades 5-6:        45-60 minutes, 6 times weekly
  • Grades 7-8:        60-90 minutes, daily
  • Grades 9+:          90-120 minutes, daily
Missed Lesson Policy:
  • Lessons will not be refunded.
  • If conflicts arise, please notify the teacher as early as possible.
  • Make-up lessons will be at the teachers discretion (remember missing 1 or 2 lessons in the year probably will not result in less than 36 lessons).
  • Failing to notify the teacher of an absense will result in the forfiet of the lesson.
